Socialist republic of Vietnam, Vietnam for short, is located in the east of Indo-China Peninsula, with the area of 32.9 square kilometers. East and southeast are close to the South China Sea. The country is bordered by China to the north, east and southeast, Laos to the west, Cambodia to the southwest, and it lies to Malaysia to the south across the sea. Territorial border line is 3927 km long. The S-shaped terrain of Vietnam is long and narrow, with the longest length about 1640 km from south to north, the widest width 600 km from east to west, the narrowest width only 48 km, respectively. The topography shows northwest high and southeast low. Mountain and plateau occupy three-quarters of the total land area. Two main plains, the Red river delta and the Mekong delta are the main agricultural areas, with the area of 20,000 kilometers and 50,000, respectively.

Vietnam has a variety of mineral resources, and about 5,000 mineral deposits and 70 kinds of minerals have been found. In 2008, Vietnam produced about 1% of the world's barite, cement and tin, and the production of crude oil ranked 7 in Asia and the Pacific region. In addition, Vietnam also produces chrome ore, coal, copper, natural gas, lead, lime, salt, iron and steel and zirconium. According to the Statistic Bureau of Geology and Mineral Resources of Vietnam, there are 832 organizations and individuals having the mining permit, among which 456 state-owned enterprises account for main body status, accounting for 54.81%; limited liability companies, joint stock companies and private enterprises for 14.44%; cooperatives for 5.05%; self-employed miners for 14.19%; and foreign-funded production enterprises for only 2.17%, respectively. Now there are a total of about 230,000 people in Vietnamese mining sector.

According to the statistics from Statistical Bureau of Vietnam, the output value of mining and quarrying industry of Vietnam (including the mineral fuel and mineral) is estimated to $1.3 billion (not changed since 1994), accounting for 4.3% of the gross domestic product (GDP) in 2008.

(1)Petroleum and natural gas
Proved oil and natural gas reserves of Vietnam is about 1.25 billion tons in the top three of the association of south-east Asian nations (ASEAN). The residual proved oil reserves of Vietnam are 82.2 million tons, and the output is 168,000 tons by 2009 (according to the relative report, 390,000 barrels a day on average in 2008). By 2009, the residual proved recoverable reserves of natural gas are 680 billion cubic meters in Vietnam. In 2005 Vietnam mined 1,680 tons of crude oil and 6.6 billion cubic meters of natural gas. The main exploration and development areas of oil and gas are the Kowloon and Nankun mountain basin. Because of the lack of refining capacity, almost all production of crude oil exports. Vietnam is in great demand of the oil and gas exploration and development technology and equipment, oil refining and petrochemical technology and equipment, energy saving technology in the field of oil and gas production and processing and transportation equipment, pipeline laying and safety technology and equipment.

Vietnam is one important coal producing country in the world, with rich coal reserves of many grades and good quality. Coal mines of Vietnam are mainly concentrated in the northern region, and Guangning Province is coal production base, with a lot of anthracite open-pit coal mines which have hundreds of years of production history. Coal belt of Guangning Province is from Dongchao in the west, and then trends along the Halong Bay to the northeast presenting half arc toward the south, with the total length of 150 km, thickness of coal seam of 20 to 28 meters, an area of 220 square kilometers, reserves of about 3 billion tons. Guangning anthracite coal field of Vietnam is one of best quality anthracites in the world. Besides Guangnign, Taiyuan City and Guangnan Province and other places also produce anthracite. Liangshan Province mainly produces lignite with the calorific value of 20.9 million focal/kg, sulfur content below 1%. Vietnam's fat coal is scattered in Laizhou, Shanluo, Heping, Taiyuan, Yiping and Yian, with very few reserves, ranging from hundreds of thousands of tons to millions of tons. Peat resources, about 6 billion tons of total reserves, are distributed in north, central and south, with medium quality, heat value of 9.6 million focal/kg ~ 14.2 million kilojoules/kg. Vietnamese coal output is 45 million tons in 2009.
Coal - mining industry group of Vietnam (TKV) is an important and the biggest mining group of Vietnam. TKV has gradually grown and makes a positive contribution for Vietnam's economic and social development. According to the report of coal production for TSD6 (power industry) submitted by TKV for the Vietnam National Committee on April 12, 2008, coal output of coal industry is 47 million tons in 2010, 57 million tons in 2015, 67 million tons in 2020, and 77 million tons in 2025. The Red River Plains Coal Mine will begin to produce coal from 2016, especially.

(3)Iron Ore
Vietnam has proved reserves with 1.3 billion tons of iron ore, and the quantity of resource is about 2.3 billion tons. Three iron mining area have been found. One is northwest area, such as Baohe, Guisha, Niangmei and Xingqing area, and iron ore reserves of Guisha is 125 million tons, mainly including limonite, with grade of 43% - 52%; The second one is north area, such as Taiyuan, Hejiang, Beigan, Gao Ping Province, which has reserves of 50 million tons, mainly including magnetite, with grade of more than 60%; The third one is the middle area, such as Shunhua, Yian, Hejing and other places, which has many types of iron ore among which Shixi deposit reserves is the largest of about 500 million tons.

(4)Titanium Ore
Up to now, Vietnam has preliminary proved ore reserves of about 20 million tons of titanium, and available production of about 15 million tons which are mainly distributed in northern Vietnam of Taiyuan and Xuanguang (about 6 million tons, mountain mine, high chromium content), central coast Hejing Province (5 million tons), Qinghua Province (4 million tons), Pingding and Pingshun Provinces (3 million tons), and coastal areas placer with low content of chromium scatter. At present stage national titanium ore output is about 150,000 tons in Vietnam, among which the annual output of mining corporation is about 40,000 tons, 50,000 tons of production of Hejign Province, and about 60,000 tons of other areas. All productions are mainly exported to Thailand, Japan and China, etc.

(5)Copper and Nickel
Vietnamese proved copper reserves are 7.95 million tons, and the quantity of resource is about 10 million tons; the proved nickel reserves are 1.52 million tons, and the quantity of resource is 5 million tons. Laojieshengquan copper deposit has raw copper reserves of 511,000 tons, the associated gold 35 tons, silver 25 tons. Nickel ore are mainly distributed in Banfu region, and reserves of nickel and copper are 193,000 tons, nickel 120,000 tons included.

Vietnamese bauxite is mainly distributed in north area, such as Gaoping Province, Liangshan Province, Xiyuan District, such as Lintong Province (Baolu, Xinlai), Duonong Province, Duole Province and Jialai and Kunsong Province. The content of Al2O3 of this kind of bauxite will be 47.5% after bauxite is selected. By 2009, Vietnamese reserves, basic reserves are 2.1 billion tons and 5.4 billion tons, respectively, and grow by 100% than the previous year. Since the 1980s, Vietnamese bauxite deposit resource of west Xiyuan belt red clay type is more than 4 billion tons, according to the Vietnamese official information, and the national wide bauxite is about 8 billion tons, which occupies an important position in the world.

Vietnam's National Oil Company will explore oil and gas in seven blocks in Cuba, 3 for the continental blocks, 4 for offshore blocks. This is the first oil and gas exploration project of Vietnam's national oil company in Latin America's project.

An analyst report of Automobil Chemical Network said that Vietnam's oil production is expected to decline to 390,000 barrels in 2011 ~ 2012 and 2018 and to 330,000 barrels in 2018, and will reach the highest point of the 400,000 barrels in 2009 ~2010.

A report from Information Group Business Monitor International Company, head office located in London, the Vietnam's oil consumption is expected to increase by 6% to 10% per year by 2012, which means that Vietnam's oil demand will reach 598,000 barrels by the end of 2012.

Vietnamese maritime space has been a hot spot of oil and gas exploration and development in recent years, and there will be more important discoveries of natural gas production in recent months.
Vietnamese natural gas output will rise from 7.7 billion cubic meters in 2007 to 25 billion cubic meters in 2018. The production of natural gas in Vietnam can not only satisfy domestic demand, but also exports to natural gas market with more energy consumption.
